POSTPONED - Sabino Canon Sunset Run - as a premptive measure to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT OPTIONS AS SOMEONE WHO HAS ALREADY REGISTERED FOR THIS RACE?

OPTION 1: We truly hope that you can come to race with us on Saturday, May 30, 2020. 

If it is not possible for you to make it on the new race date, choose one of the options below:

OPTION 2: Do the race virtually. On April 11, 2020 we will post a Google Form that you can fill out to tell us about your Virtual run, which you can do on any course of your choice between April 11, 2020 and April 18, 2020. After your virtual run is completed you can head down to the Running Shop at 3055 N Campbell Ave #153, Tucson, AZ 85719 to pick up your shirt and finisher prize - only during the Running Shop's regular business hours (which you can find online). 

OPTION 3: You can defer your entry until next year's Sabino Canyon Sunset Run. Just drop an email to the Race Director if you are choosing this option. You will not be automatically deferred, you must tell the RD if you want to select this option!

*Refunds are not possible per SAR policy due to the fact that many expenses have already been incurred with this race. We hope you will bear with us and understand that we still hope to support our awesome local charity, the Friends of Sabino Canyon, as well as the SAR organization itself with the proceeds from this event.

** PLEASE NOTE THAT IF WE ARE UNABLE TO HOLD THE EVENT ON SATURDAY, MAY 30, 2020 DUE TO POLICY CHANGES RELATED TO PUBLIC EVENTS AND THE COVID-19 ISSUE, THIS RACE WILL BE MOVED TO A VIRTUAL RACE. YOU WILL THEN BE ABLE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN DOING THE VIRTUAL RACE AND DEFERRING TO NEXT YEAR'S EVENT.

Come join us for one of the most iconic races in Southern Arizona! Sabino Canyon located in the Coronado National Forest, is one of the most beautiful desert canyons in the American southwest and a true jewel of the Tucson community. This unique 7.4 mile race is designed to capitalize on the majestic nature of Sabino Canyon to provide a unique opportunity to experience the challenges of a great race in a truly magnificent setting.

This race is part of The Running Shop SAR Grand Prix.

Sabino Canyon is located at 5900 North Sabino Canyon Road, just north of Sunrise Drive - (map).

Parking

Please park just north of the park at Canyon View Elementary School (5725 N. Sabino Canyon Road) and Esperero Middle School (5801 N. Sabino Canyon Road). When you near the entrance of the park there will signage and volunteers to direct you.

Whether you park in the main Sabino Canyon lot or at the schools, no matter how you enter Sabino Canyon, there will be Forest Service rangers there to collect the daily use fee to enter the park. If you have a pass, make sure to have your pass with you along with your ID. Otherwise, entry will be $5 per peson.

Please note that parking is not allowed on Sabino Canyon Road north of Sunrise Drive.

Date and Time

Packet Pickup - Race Day, 5/30/20 from 10:15AM - 12:30PM at Performance Footwear near Broadway and Craycroft.

Early start time (6:00pm) for 7.4 mile walkers/joggers. (we will do this start as soon as the last tram leaves the main road). This start is for entrants aged 60 and above, and any entrants who need more time to finish before nightfall. Entrants under 60 years of age who opt for the Early Start will not be eligible for age-group prizes or Grand Prix points. All entrants remain eligible for raffle prizes.

Main race, 7.4 miles (6:15pm)
Sunset is at 7:24pm. Aid stations and finish line will be picked up 105 minutes after the start. If you plan to be out there longer be aware you’ll be on your own. Carry a flashlight!

Race Awards

Awards ceremony will follow the race at approximately 7:30pm.

Awards to the top 3 overall and top masters male and female finishers and the top 3 male and female finishers in five year age groups. The following age groups will be used: 19&Under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+

Packet Pick-up

Saturday, May 30, 2020:
10:15am - 12:30pm at Performance Footwear (5350 E Broadway #170 in the Williams Center)
Those who pickup race packets at Performance will be entered into a raffle for a free pair of shoes.

5pm - 6:00pm at Sabino Canyon.

  • Packet Pickup will be Saturday, May 30, 2020, from 10:15AM to 12:30PM at Performance Footwear, 5350 East Broadway Boulevard #170, Tucson, AZ 85711
  • While they last, a few registrations for all events are available at Performance Footwear, 5350 E Broadway #170 in the Williams Center. Please note that only cash or checks are accepted for payment. Anyone who registers in-store will be entered into a raffle for a free pair of shoes from Performance. There will be no new registrations taken at the event site.

Race Distances and Courses

7.4 mile race:
The out and back 7.4 mile paved course along Sabino Creek crosses nine bridges and provides the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Catalina Mountains as the sun sets against them. The course is uphill on the way into the canyon and downhill on the way back, with aid stations at approximately miles 1.6, 3.7 (turn-around point), and 5.8.

7.4 mile Early-start:
The early-start event will begin approximately 15 minutes prior to the main race entry and is for entrants aged 60 and above, and any entrants who need more time tofinish before nightfall. Entrants under 60 years of age who opt for the Early Start will not be eligible for age-group prizes or Grand Prix points. All entrants remain eligible for raffle prizes. This event will be timed just like the 7.4 mile race, and the results will be included on the SAR website.

Please, no bicycles, strollers, skateboards, roller-blades, or pets allowed on the course.
