EVENT CANCELLED

The Southern Arizona Roadrunners Board of Directors has been closely monitoring COVID-19 and has been in communication with health professionals, local and state government, and the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). The Board met on March 12 in a special conference to discuss the concerns surrounding COVID-19 and its potential impact on the running and greater Southern Arizona community. 

It was decided in the special conference that SAR will cancel the Desert Leprechaun 5K and 1 Mile Run/Walk scheduled for March 15, 2020. This decision was not an easy one, but the Board and the Race Director are taking this preventive measure to ensure the safety of the community that we care for so deeply. 

We understand the disappointment of those who were as excited as we were to attend this race. We are offering entrants the choice between one of two options:

1. Race virtually 

2. Defer your entry until next year’s event

The Race Director will send a separate email shortly that will detail the Virtual Race option. After receiving that email, please reply to the Race Director with any questions.

This cancellation is a preventive measure. We encourage everyone to exercise appropriate caution and refer you to the following websites for guidelines on minimizing your risk:

DETAILS ON VIRTUAL RACE AND DEFERRAL OPTIONS:

As was announced in an earlier email, as an organization SAR has decided as a preventative measure to cancel the race for this year due to concerns regarding the COVID-19 virus. The St. Patrick's Day Festival & Parade is also cancelled for the same reason.

Here you will find details on what your options are now if you are someone who has already paid your entry fees for this race:

If you are a 5K registrant you can choose one of two options (not both).

Option 1. You can run a Virtual Race from Saturday, 3/14/20 - Saturday, 3/21/20. With this option you will be able to pick up your race shirt and race finisher medal at the Running Shop.
    
    a. Run a 5K on any course that is convenient for you, anytime from Saturday, 3/14/20 - Friday, 3/20/20.
    b. Fill out the following google form that includes your virtual 5k time: 2020 Desert Leprechaun 5k Virtual Run - https://tinyurl.com/rxk7muk
    c. Go to the Running Shop during their regular business hours between Saturday, 3/14/20 and Saturday, 3/21/20 to pick up your shirt and finisher medal. They are open 10-6 Monday-Friday and 10-5 on Saturday (closed Sundays).  UPDATE: 5/29/20 - If you still need to pick up your items from this virtual race please call ahead to the Running Shop at (520) 325-5097 during regular business hours and let them know you are coming to pick up your items from the Desert Leprechaun virtual race. Let them know as well about what time you will arrive and they will put your items outside the door of the Running Shop for you. Alternatively, you can wait until the store is able to open again for regular business.

Option 2. You can defer your race entry until next year's event

    a. If you do not do the virtual 5k, you will be automatically entered in the 2021 Desert Leprechaun 5K event. For the 2021 event, you will not need to pay any additional entry fees.

    b. If you elect this option you do not need to do anything, you will be entered into the 2021 event automatically.

Refunds are not an option per standard SAR policy due to the fact that the event has already incurred large expenses leading up to race day.

If you were a one mile fun run/walk registrant, you were not slated to receive a shirt or a finisher medal, so the virtual race option does not apply to you.

Southern Arizona Roadrunners (SAR) is very pleased and proud to announce a new running and walking event coming to downtown Tucson in partnership with the iconic Tucson St. Patrick's Day Parade Festival. It's a St. Patrick's Day party like no other!

DATE: Sunday, March 15, 2020

WHERE: Near Armory Park and the Tucson Children's Museum

WHEN: 7:30am - Registration begins

             8:30am - One Mile begins

             9:00am - 5K begins

             9:45am - 5K award ceremony

             10:00am - Tucson St. Patrick's Day Festival Begins

             11:00am - Tucson St. Patrick's Day Parade Begins

ROUTE: Using the Tucson St. Patrick's Day Parade route

PACKET PICKUP: 10:00am - 1pm Saturday, 3/14/2020 at The Running Shop, 3055 N Campbell Ave #153, Tucson, AZ 85719

SWAG:

            * Totally unique, custom finisher medal for 5K (first 350 finishers)

            * One FREE beer at the festival with your race entry (only for those over 21 years old, of course!) for both 5K and 1M entrants

            * Custom Race Shirts for 5K in both men's and women's sizes (while supplies last. Packet Pickup and Race Day registrations may not get a shirt)

            * Lots of great activities at the Festival starting at 10am including Food Vendors, Merchandize Vendors and a super cool Kids Zone. Many of the items at the festival, such as the food, much of the merchandize, etc., have a cost associated with them that is not included in your race entry fee.

            * Both the men's and women's winner of the 5K will get to be in the parade

            * and so much more.

Bring your entire family out in the morning to get your run or walk on, and then stay for the amazing parade and festival. It will be an experience you won't soon forget!

We at SAR are very proud to continue the long running tradition associated with the festival by Steve Taggart and the great folks at Tagg Running Events.

A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to the Children of Fallen Officers Scholarship Fund.
