A Perfect Mother’s Day Race!

The Tucson 5000’s claim of being one of the fastest in the west did not disappoint this weekend.  Over 300 runners came out to perfect weather on Mother’s Day 2015 to take part in the event.  The women’s winner, Kate Schwartz set a course record and a state age group record by winning in a time of 16:52.  This is over 40 seconds faster than she ran last year!   Rounding out the top 3 for women were Aleta Jokish in 18:19 and Suzy Mastumoto in 18:48.  Suzy was the top master’s runner as well.  On the men’s side, Anthony Francisco handily won in 15:46.  He has been winning races for many years and shows up every once in a while to remind the youngsters that he’s still got it.  Second place was Stephen Schaefer in 16:08 and Robert Seaman in 16:25.  The top master’s runner for the men was Jeff Matsumoto, who ran 17:14.  We gave out a prize to the fastest Mom and that went to Andrea Hayward, who ran 19:51.  While she got to take home a nice bouquet of flowers, the rest of the moms settled for chocolate dipped strawberries at the finish line.  They didn’t last long!

A big thanks goes out to Sharon Bart at the Running Shop for her generous sponsorship for many years.  She gave us the 400 technical shirts this year that were a big hit.  We couldn’t put on this race without her help.  Also helping were an army of volunteers.  Thank you to Steve and Sheryl Felde, who organized the crew.  They included (but are not limited to), Marti and Stephan Ackermann, Joe Faulk, Leo Richard, Geri  Baker, Connie Lopez, Cindy Schnell, Eve Shapiro, Steve Sheldon, Jan Schwartz, Sandra Heater, Ann Hollis, Michelle Hawk, and Maureen Cunningham.

This race helps support the Pima College Cross Country and Track & Field Teams.  We are off to Hutchinson, Kansas this week to compete in the NJCAA National Track & Field Championships.  Thanks to your support, team members will have duffel bags and sweatshirts to make the trips more comfortable.

Finally, we forgot to raffle off the gift certificates for a Running Shop gift certificate.  Your winners are Jennifer Keyes, Patrick Jerome, and Rebekah McHolm!  If you know any of these three, please tell them to stop by the Running Shop to claim their prize.

Thank you for coming out to the event.  If you have any feedback  or pictures you’d like to share, please drop me a line at gwenneborg@hotmail.com
