What is the Festival of Miles?

Mar 27, 2017

Some have asked us how the Friday Night Festival of Miles is part of the TMC Meet Me Downtown 5k Weekend.  We've added a Friday night series of events as part of the popular "TMC Meet Me Downtown 5k" in order to make a full weekend of events.  Basically, we're trying to make the TMC Meet Me Downtown Weekend a big deal -- we want it to be more fun for our local runners and a destination for runners from around the country.  Last year participants from over 30 states came to Tucson to do TMC Meet Me Downtown -- and we want to continue to promote Tucson as a great place to live and a great place to visit!

Saturday night, May 27 is the traditional TMC Meet Me Downtown 5k Night  Run and Walk, with over 2000 runners and walkers cruising the Downtown neighborhoods -- every participant gets a free shirt and free beer at the beer garden -- plus live music, food trucks, after-party at Hotel Congress, and other great activities.  Plus, with over $4,000 in prize money, this event attracts the fastest runners in the country so you can play with the big kids!

Friday night May 26 is the second annual Festival of Miles: a series of separate one-mile races.  You can run or walk, you can go with friends, or you can race your heart out!  This year, we have the Tucson Tutu Mile -- you must wear a tutu -- with prize money. There is also the Battle of the Badges for all regional civil servants and first-responders -- police, sheriff, fire departments, Border Patrol, Davis Monthan, National Guard, prison guards, National Park Service, and more.  The FitKidz event is a big hit, with over 500 kids under 12 running for free!

And this year's special treat is that the Festival of Miles is the RRCA National Championship race -- over $3,000 in prize money and special awards for open runners, runners 40-and-over; runners 50-and-over, and runners 60-and-over.

On the social side, we'll have the beer garden, food trucks, live music, Muscle Milk arch, stiltwalkers, roaming magicians and more.  The Children's Museum will be open, too!

So, that's the plan.  Let me know if you have any questions -- randy@runtucson.net.

Registration Open for the 2017 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown and the TMC Meet Me Downtown Weekend!

Feb 28, 2017

Yippee!  Click here to register online for the 2017 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown.  Don't want to commit to all three events? Click here to register for the 2017 TMC Meet Me Downtown, including the Friday Night Festival of Miles!

This year mark's the 6th year since the loss of Gabe Zimmerman. The 2011 shooting of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and murder of 6 innocents shook our city to the core. As part of our ongoing recognition and celebration of those whom we lost, we invite you to join us in pursuit of health, community, and the joy that comes from being outside in this great region.

Three unique Tucson events for one low price

Saturday night, May 27: TMC Meet Me Downtown 5k Night Run Run/Walk
Sunday morning, September 17: New Event: Inaugural TMC 10k, with companion 5k
Sunday morning, October 29: TMC Get Moving Tucson A-Mountain Half-Marathon Run and Tucson Lifestyle 5k Walk/Run

What You Get
All participants in the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown will continue to receive the special "Run Tucson" Triple Crown shirt, a unique completion medallion, and entry into each of the three races of the series.

New Beneficiary
The 2017 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown will raise funds for BEYOND-TUCSON, the Tucson-based organization "whose mission is to promote the use of good science and rational analysis to improve individual and community health."
Please know that $10 of each GZTC registration will go directly to BEYOND -- plus each race will raise funds for other local organizations, including the Children's Museum, Educational Enrichment Foundation, Greater Tucson Leadership, Living Streets Alliance, Team Hoyt, Cox Charities, the Tucson Symphony, Southern Arizona Roadrunners, and others.

New Race

We are replacing the Saguaro Labor Day Run with a brand new event: the inaugural TMC Tucson 10k is scheduled for Sunday morning, September 17th.
Staged at Pima Community College West, the TMC Tucson 10k will loop the beautiful cactus forest roads in the Tucson Mountains.  You'll still have hills, but we think this will be a fast and scenic 10k -- plus, we'll make sure to have a companion 5k walk/run and a kids dash so that all ages and abilities can participate.

Why the change?  Well, we have to put a hard cap on the Saguaro Labor Day Run this year, so to make it fair to everyone we have moved Saguaro out of the Triple Crown and created this new event.

Virtual Triple Crown
Can't make the dates?  No worries -- you can sign up for the 2nd Annual Virtual Crown and participate even if you're not in town!!

Four reasons why you should come tonight!

May 27, 2016

1) You can sign up for the Friday FITKIDZ, the Friday Night Miles and Saturday's 5k!  Tonight features the free FitKidz for children 12-and-under, the first-ever Tucson Tutu Mile, the Battle of the Badges, plus the Open and Master's RRCA State Champs.  Super-cool medal for all finishers!  Only $20 for all the miles you can race . . .  Tomorrow night is the world-famous TMC 5k Night Run and Walk.

2)When was the last time you saw someone run close to 4 minutes for a mile?  Well, tonight might be the night, with Olympic runners and other super-speedsters from England, Flagstaff, Albuquerque, California, and Tucson.  Our very own Craig Curley will race against other world-class runners. They're vying for over $2,000 in prize money, so please come out and cheer 'em on!

3) Our goal is to create an early-summer running party, celebrating the greatness of Tucson.  So come down, listen to the live music, snag some food truck delectables, then use your bib number at Downtown restaurants and bars for discounts, and have a fun summer night.
4) Also, don't forget that the t-shirt sizing is first-come, first-served, so come down and try to get the shirt that you want.
Oh, and don't forget to follow all City of Tucson parking regulations -- allowing 30 feet before intersections, not blocking driveways and hydrants, etc

RRCA

LOGISTICS
Q. Where is the race?
A: The race location on both nights is 200 South Sixth Avenue, between the Children's Museum and Armory Park.

Q: Where is parking?
A: There is plenty of Downtown street parking; see the Downtown Tucson Partnership site.
Q. Can I wear headphones?
A.  We don't want you to and we strongly discourage headphones -- we have lined up some of Tucson's best live music throughout each race course, so take off the buds and enjoy a social run with friends and some kick-ass Tucson music!
Q: Who is doing photography?
A: The Goatagrapher will be taking snapshots that will be posted on his facebook page and the SAR facebook page.  Oro Valley Photography is taking finish line photos for both nights.  We'll send details about that after the race.  And PuckerUp Photo Booth will be on hand for fun group and individual shots!
Q: Will it be hot?
A: Well, it depends on how you define hot.  It looks like the high on Friday will be 89 and the hight on Friday will be 95.  A few years ago it was 104 on race day, so it seems downright chilly to the locals . . .
Please use common sense on race night to remain cool - wear light clothes, stay hydrated, and slow down if you need to. The course will have a Water Station at Mile One and at Mile Two, plus some fresh ice to keep you cool.  Staying hydrated keeps your core body temperature down, so if possible bring your own water to keep you cool!
Thanks to race beneficiary Child and family Resources for volunteering at Mile 1 (well, actually, at 18th Street and Sixth Avenue)!  Thanks to the Educational Enrichment Foundation and Imagine Greater Tucson for volunteering just past Mile 2 (17th Street and Seventh Avenue).
Q: May I run with a stroller?
A: Yes. Please be safe and respectful of others, though.
Q: May I walk or run with my dog or ride a bicycle?
A: No, for safety no dogs or wheels, other than strollers.  Wheelchair racers will start early.

Q: Who is helping with the race logistics and safety?
A: Special thanks to the City of Tucson and the Tucson Police Department for working with us to ensure safe road closures and providing permits.  Thanks, too, to Rural Metro for providing an ambulance on race weekend.  Thanks to Dave Hill for measuring and certifying the course.  Desert Barricades drew up the road closure plans and will set the course.
Tucson Police Department has asked that you NOT bring bags to the starting area.  There is plenty of nearby parking, so please keep the race area free of your running gear.

Q: Where are portojohns at the race site?
A: Waste Management portojohns will be at the north end of the Children's Museum, on the grass facing 12th Street
Q. What's this about a Saturday night Beer Garden?
A. This is our fourth annual Beer Garden.  This year, it's hosted by the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bicyclists.
Beer Garden Rules: every 21+ runner receives one free pour.  Additional pours are $5 apiece.  Please bring cash.  For insurance and legal reasons, we reserve the right to refuse service to any runner.  Please bring ID in case we have to check your age.

Q. What's this I hear about an after-party?
A. After the TMC Night Run on Saturday night, we'll adjourn to the Hotel Congress where our good friends at HC will be offering discounts and specials to runners and walkers -- be sure to bring your race number!

Q. What's this about a Food Truck Round-Up?
A. On both nights there will be about 4-6 food trucks parked at the race site so that you can purchase food, ice cream, and other treats.
Q. Are you providing food?
A. Not really.  TMC is donating chips and pretzels and other snacks, and we've set it up for you to get discounts at the following Downtown restaurants - please bring your bib number:

HiFi  20% off any food and beverage item excluding any specials
Thunder Canyon Brewery Restaurant and Pub 20% off all Thunder Canyon brewed beers AND 20% off food (excluding Happy Hour discounted appetizers)
Veg Box Café 15% off
Planet Smoothie 20% off self-serve yogurt and $1 off of any smoothie
Good Oak Bar 10% off tab, including drinks
Diablo Burger 10% off tab, including drinks
Reilly Craft Pizza and Drink 10% off bill
The HUB  Restaurant $2 off ice cream
The HUB Ice Cream Factory $2 off a small or large cup of ice cream
Delectables All Arizona Beers on Tap $2 off a pint!  All Appetizers $1 off
Casa Vicente Specials:  On Friday, May 27th, we will have Santa Panchita (Salsa, Rumba dance band) on our outdoor stage from @ 9:00pm - Midnight.  Friday night there will be a $10 cover which includes a bowl of Paella cooked onsite in  a super large Paella Pan. Saturday night, no cover. Our outdoor bar will have some drink specials including beer, wine and sangria. Our restaurant's kitchen is open from 4:30 - 11:00. Folks wanting to come for dinner after the race are encouraged to make reservations in advance.

TIMING

Q. Where do I put my race number?
A: Put your number on the front of your shirt.  You will get a race number with a timing tag attached to it.  The timer, Greg Wenneborg, is using the IPICO timing system, so keep your bib on the front of your shirt - and please don't fold or bend the timing bib or you may not show up in the results.  Please be sure to cross the starting line mats and the starting line finish chute mats or we may not be able to get your time.
Q.  Which finish time counts?
A. We hope to be able to use "chip time," meaning that your time will start when you cross the starting line.  However, because of the large numbers of participants, Greg tells us that we may have to revert to "start-time" or "gun time," meaning that your time will begin when the race starts, not when you cross the mat.
Q. Well, what's the purpose of having a chip system then?
A. Accuracy and speed of results.  Plus, USATF rules state that all age group awards are based on "starting time" not chip time.

It will be hot!!  Please use common sense on race night to remain cool – wear light clothes, stay hydrated, and slow down if you need to.  The course will have two water stations, plus WaterMart fresh ice to keep you cool.  Experts say that staying hydrated keeps your core body temperature down, so if possible bring your own water to keep you cool!

Thanks to Dave Hill for measuring and certifying the new course and special thanks to Rural Metro/Southwest Ambulance for providing an ambulance on race night.  We’re grateful, too, to the City of Tucson and the Tucson Police Department for allowing us to close some of our major Downtown thoroughfares.  Desert Barricades have helped ensure all of our road closures, too.

Whew – that’s a lot of information, we know, but if you’ve read this far you should be well-prepared for a great weekend!

Tia and I thank you very much for signing up – we’ll see you out there . . . .

CHILDREN’S MILE
Q.  My children are doing the Children’s Mile.  Can I run with them?
A. Yes, but we prefer that everyone who does the Mile do it with a race number, so please fill out a form and sign the waiver.

Q. If I am doing the 5k, can I use that number for the Children’s Mile?
A. Yes.

Q. We are doing the Children’s Mile. Do we get an electronic timing number?
A. The One Mile will not be officially timed so you will get a regular race number, but no timing chip.  The One Mile is free but everyone needs to register, sign a waiver, and wear a race number.  (See below for additional details on the race number and timing.)

Q. We are doing the Children’s Mile.  Do we get a t-shirt?  Do winners get prizes?
A. The Children’s Mile is free - all youth receive a Ben’s Bells Kindness Coin, but there are no prizes for top finishers and no t-shirt giveaways. We might have some available for sale after the race, though, so check at the SAR table . . . .

TEAM CHALLENGE
Q. Can we register for a team in person on Friday or Saturday?
A.  No, team registration has ended.

Q. Can I still add someone to our team?
A. Unfortunately, not anymore.

Q. How do we know if we won a gift certificate?
A. We will announce the winner of the biggest team and the raffle prize before the start.

Triple Crown
Q: I registered for the Triple Crown - where do I get my Triple Crown shirt and Kindness Coin?
A:  Registrants for the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown can pick up their shirts and Ben’s Bells Kindness Coin at the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown tent on race night from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at the race site.  Thanks to the Tucson Tri-Girls for handling the volunteer duties!

Q: Can people still sign up for the Triple Crown?
A: Registration is currently closed, but we will open it again after TMC Meet Me Downtown for the summer registration period.

Q. I have signed up for the Triple Crown, but how can I be part of a team for the Meet Me Downtown Team Competition.
A.  At this moment, we’ve ended the team registration, sorry

RACE SCHEDULE and LOGISTICS
Q. Where is the race and what time does it start?
A: The race location is 200 South Sixth Avenue, between the Children’s Museum and Armory Park.  The Free Mile starts at 6:30 and the 5k starts at 7:00 pm.  Click here for the USATF certified course map.

Q: On race night, where do I park? A: There is plenty of Downtown street parking; see the Downtown Tucson Partnership site for help on navigating construction and finding a place to park.

Q: Will it be hot?
A: Yes, it will be hot!!  Please use common sense on race night to remain cool - wear light clothes, stay hydrated, and slow down if you need to. The course will have a Culligan Water Station at Mile One and at Mile Two, plus WaterMart fresh ice to keep you cool.  Staying hydrated keeps your core body temperature down, so if possible bring your own water to keep you cool!

Thanks to race beneficiary Child and family Resources for volunteering at Mile 1 (well, actually, at 18th Street and Sixth Avenue)!  Thanks to the Educational Enrichment Foundation and Imagine Greater Tucson for volunteering just past Mile 2 (20th and Seventh Avenue).

Q: May I run with a stroller?
A: Yes.

Thanks, too, to Rural Metro/Southwest Ambulance for providing an ambulance on race night.  Thanks to Dave Hill for measuring and certifying the course.  Desert Barricades drew up the road closure plans and will set the course.

Tucson Police Department has asked that we ask that you do NOT bring bags to the starting area.  There is plenty of nearby parking, so please keep the race area free of your running gear.

Q: Where are portojohns at the race site?
A: Waste Management portojohns will be at the north end of the Children’s Museum, on the grass facing 12th Street

Q. What’s this about a Beer Garden?
A. The Beer Garden is a go!!  Thanks to Finley Distributing and local entrepreneur JulieBar, we’re proud to host JULIE’SBAR, with free sample beverages for those over 21. We’ll have one booth for
New Belgium brews - they will be pouring Rolle Bolle and Fat Tire from a jockey box. They will also have one booth for Miller Coors brews, pouring Summer Shandy, Redd’s Apple Ale, and Miller 64.

Everyone over 21 will receive one free sample, so bring ID!!!  We will not sell beer. The beer garden will be inside the gates of the Children’s Museum, on the north side.  Bring ID to gain entrance.

Q. What’s this I hear about an after-party?
A. After the race, Hotel Congress and Maynard’s Kitchen will be offering discounts and specials to runners and walkers—be sure to bring your race number!

Q. What are prizes for fast running?
A. To help promote excellence in running, the TMC Meet Me Downtown event will provide the following prize money: for the men we’re offering $100 to the first five men who break 15:15, with another $100 for first place and another $100 for breaking the course record of 14:30.4, which Ian Burrell has done twice in a row.  For the women, we’re offering $100 to the first five women who break 18:00, with another $100 for first place and another $100 for breaking the course record off 17:23 by former UA Wildcat, Maggie Callahan.

First place overall and master’s will receive a gift certificate to the Running Shop, along with age groups as follows:15 and below, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80 and over.  First place overall can double-dip in their age group.

TMC Meet Me Downtown is the Arizona State RRCA Championship, with additional coaster awards for open, masters (40+), grand masters (50+), and senior grand masters (60+) categories for both men and women.

Q. What if I am not fast—are there prizes?
A. This year, we have a Middle-of-the-pack Award Donated by Etherton Galleries: the person who is the exact middle of the finishing results on race night will receive the wonderful 376 page A Gift of Angels: The Art of San Xavier de Bac, by the renowned art historian Bernard Fontana with photographs by Edward McCain.  (Please note: We’ve never done this before, so we may modify our plan, but for now the plan is to award this at the Award Ceremony based on the finishing times we have at that time.)

TIMING
Q. Where do I put my race number, and why is it so big?
A: Put your number on the front of your shirt.  You will get a race number with a timing tag attached to it.  Our timer, Greg Wenneborg, is using the new IPICO timing system that SAR has used this year - you need to keep your bib on the front of your shirt - please don’t fold or bend the timing bib or you may not show up in the results.  Please be sure to cross the starting line mats and the starting line finish chute mats or we may not be able to get your time.

Q.  Which finish time counts?
A. We hope to be able to use “chip time,” meaning that your time will start when you cross the starting line.  However, because of the large numbers of participants, Greg tells us that we may have to revert to “start-time” or “gun time,” meaning that your time will begin when the race starts, not when you cross the mat.

Q. Well, what’s the purpose of having a chip system then?
A. Accuracy and speed of results.  Plus, USATF rules state that all age group awards are based on “starting time” not chip time.

RACE NIGHT SCHEDULE
Q.  What is the schedule of events?
A: Glad you asked that: here are more details on the weekend schedule:

Friday, May 31st:

It’ll Be Hot on Race Night

Jun 1, 2012

We at the Meet Me Downtown run thank the 1552 pre-registered runners and walkers—this is more than last year, so we expect quite the crowd Saturday night!  Please remember that it will be hot on race night.  Here are a couple of tips to managing the heat:

• Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.  This is a fun night, so remember to walk if the heat is too much.  There are two water stations on the course with plenty of water on hand, so please be sure to drink!

• Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.  Some common symptoms of heatstroke can include rapid pulse, difficulty breathing, high body temperature, lack of sweat, dizziness, confusion and seizures.  If someone is suffering from heatstroke, seek one of the 9 (nine) Tucson Police officers out on the course or call 911.  Rural Metro/Southwest Ambulance will have a crew on hand at the finish line, so please seek help if you need it!

Details on Meet Me Downtown

May 30, 2012

On behalf of the Southern Arizona Roadrunners, we thank you for signing up for the June 2nd TMC Meet Me Downtown Night Run and Walk, staged at 200 South Sixth Avenue in Downtown Tucson.  Please remember that the race takes place rain or shine, so be ready to rock next Saturday night!!  At this late date, there are no reimbursements.

Please remember, too, that because of Downtown construction, we’ve changed the race location to 200 South Sixth Avenue, in front of the Children’s Museum and across from Armory Park.  We’re closing Sixth Avenue, Stone Avenue and all the other race streets to all traffic, so you’ll have a fast course with lots of evening shade.  There should be plenty of free Downtown street parking.  See the Downtown Tucson Partnership site for help on navigating construction and finding a place to park.

Below is a schedule of the weekend’s activities, plus additional notes.

Friday, June 1st: 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Wine and Cheese Happy Hour, In-Person Registration, and Packet Pick-Up on Friday night from 6:00- 8:00 pm at The Running Shop (3055 North Campbell).  Meet our special guest from Runner’s World, the running pied-piper and world-renowned writer Amby Burfoot, who will chat and sign books.  (You can also see Amby on KGUN Channel 9’s Morning Blend on Friday, June 1st.)  We’ve never done a social time like this, so we have no idea what to expect.  We don’t know how many will show up, so we’ve ordered food and drink for about 150 from Pastiche Modern Eatery and Wine Bar. . . .

Saturday, June 2nd
10:00am -1:00pm: Packet pick-up and additional registration at The Running Shop (3055 North Campbell, north of Glenn)
5:00-6:30:  Packet pick-up and additional registration at the race site at the Children’s Museum, 200 South Sixth Avenue.  Our sponsors, vendors, and beneficiaries will be available for visits all night.
5:30:  Children’s activities (imagination blocks in the courtyard, face painting, bubbles, and other fun stuff)  begin in the grass area in front of the Children’s Museum, hosted by the Children’s Museum and Tucson Medical Center
6:30:  LeeAnne Savage & Her ROCKSTAR Band starts – check out her performance last week on the Morning Blend
6:45:  Comments by Ross Zimmerman, Julia Strange from TMC, and Amby Burfoot
7:00:  Race start, band rocks on —runners and walkers welcome (strollers welcome, but no other wheels and no animals, please!).  Be sure to smile for the cameras.  All the way from Houston, official race photographers http://www.prphotoshots.com will snap you out on the course, then you can view and purchase your race photos at their site.  After the race, get your free photo taken by local company PhotoFunBooth - see http://www.photofunbooth.com.
7:15:  Post-race includes fruit and granola snacks from Sunflower Market, cold drinks from Body Armor, and water from Culligan Water—plus fire tricks by local troupe Elemental Artistry and the first-ever Running Race Tucson Food Trucks, with some awesome food to purchase, including pizza, barbeque, Hawaiian shaved ice, cup cakes, and other great munchies.
8:30 (approx):  Begin awards and raffles – thanks to The Running Shop, Human Kinetics Press, and a few Downtown merchants for providing raffle items
8:30 (approx):  Free showing of The Muppets, courtesy of race beneficiary Cinema La Placita, in La Placita Village at 110 South Church Street
8:30 and onwards:  Bring your bib number to post-race party at Hotel Congress and Maynard’s Kitchen – Hotel Congress is providing a live band on its patio, plus food and drink discounts.  For a quieter post-race experience, head over to Maynard’s Kitchen for additional food and drink discounts.

Other items:
It will be hot!!  Please use common sense on race night to remain cool – wear light clothes, stay hydrated, and slow down if you need to.  The course will have two Culligan Water Stations, plus WaterMart fresh ice to keep you cool.  Experts say that staying hydrated keeps your core body temperature down, so if possible bring your own water to keep you cool!

Thanks to you and our great sponsors, over $25,000 is being raised for local non-profits: Children’s Museum, Tucson; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson; Child and Family Resources; Educational Enrichment Foundation; Cinema La Placita; Greater Tucson Leadership; Imagine Greater Tucson; Critical Path Institute’s PKD Foundation; Southern Arizona Roadrunners; Fox Theatre; and Child and Family Resources.

Those of you coming from out of town might want to stay at the Hotel Tucson City Center for only $59. Just mention that you’re with the Southern Arizona Roadrunners.  Contact Hotel Tucson City Center, an InnSuites Boutique Collection Hotel at 475 N. Granada Ave.  Call 520-622-3000, ext 808

Thank you!
Ajax Barricades and Desert Barricades have helped ensure all of our road closures, too.

Whew – that’s a lot of information, we know, but if you’ve read this far you should be well-prepared for a great weekend!

Tia and I thank you very much for signing up – we’ll see you out there . . . .

Meet Me Downtown Race Summary

Jun 10, 2011

Thank you to all the race registrants, sponsors, partners, and spectators!  Over 1900 registered—way beyond our expectations, making this the biggest road race in the City of Tucson!  Not only did we have a ton of people, but we had some speedsters—congratulations to race winner Ian Burrell.  In an interesting coincidence, he ran 14:37.9 and last year he ran 14:37.6—pretty darn fast in the 100-degree heat!  Speaking of pretty darn fast, congratulations to top woman runner, Hanna Henson from the UA in 18:00.7, a few seconds off the course record set by Everlyn Lagat two years ago.  On the master’s side, Phoenix’s John Reich set a new master’s record in 16:37, a full minute faster than Dave Dobler’s previous master’s mark.  Top master’s woman Polly Campbell also set a master’s record in 19:40.  Great running from the master’s crowd!  We’re still checking for other age-group records . . .

A note on timing: the race timer will continue to post updates, so if you spot any errors that we need to adjust, please send an email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and he’ll get it taken care of.  In the meantime, if you ran the race but did not pick up your race t-shirt, we are ordering more shirts and they will be available at The Running Shop at the end of next week. If you won an age group award, please also visit The Running Shop for your prizes.

A further note on race timing: many of you have commented on how crowded the finish line was—indeed, with 1700 folks finishing within about 30 minutes it certainly was.  Please know that the Southern Arizona Roadrunners is in the midst of purchasing a new electronic timing system.  Frankly, instead of purchasing a national system, we’re trying to keep money local and support young entrepreneurs, so we’ve been in the process of working with local mountain bike race director Todd Sadow of Epic Rides to modify his system for runners.  We’ve been testing the new system and plan on implementing it at the SAR fall races, beginning with the TMC Saguaro National Park Labor Day Run.

For those new to local running events, Meet Me Downtown is produced by the Southern Arizona Roadrunners—a member-driven non-profit devoted to promoting health and wellness through running and walking.

If you are not a SAR member, please consider joining—you can save all sorts of money off race entry fees, receive discounts to many local merchants, and be part of a great community of people. See http://azroadrunners.org/go/category/membership/join for details.

Thanks to our title sponsor, Tucson Medical Center—without their funding, this race could not happen!

Thanks again to our partners in the media: Caliente and the Arizona Daily Star, Tucson Lifestyle, 92.9 The Mountain, and Cox Communications. Indeed, we’ve had some great media coverage lately—if you missed the recent articles in the paper, see the Arizona Daily Star article on the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown and the Caliente article on the MMD race. KVOA-4 ran a nice interview with Ross ZImmerman and KOLD-13 did a nice piece on the race itself. Finally, Tucson Lifestyle ran a great piece in the current issue.

Volunteers: Races like this cannot be produced without volunteers.  Last Saturday’s race needed about 100 or so—including the following folks: Joe Plassman and his pick-up truck, Steve Outridge and his pick-up truck, Kara Middendorf and her Tile Outlet truck, Steve and Sheryl Felde,  Scout Phillips and friend Dawn, Michelle Hawk, Sarah Vular, Brandon Briscoe, Marti Ackerman, Russel Riordan, Marc Janis, Connie Lopez, Stacie LaPoint, Rachel Hilgeford, Dennis Bonilla, Nicole Lund, Aaron Lund, Erin Boland, Sharon Pascoe, Alisha Bashford, Chris Garcia, Jennifer Garcia, Jocie Riley, Tim Bentley, Lucas Tyler, Tina Perry, Jane Swanson, Buddy Martin, Wally Barunda, Roger Shanley, Vanessa Marion, Sandy White, Janet Holland, Sandra Heater, Sue Abramson, Doreen Castillo, Mari Diaz, Greg Gadarian, the gang from Child and Family Resources that managed the 2-mile water station along with Maureen Cunningham, the gang from Educational Enrichment Foundation that managed the 1-mile water station, the gang of young adults from JobCorps, the group from the Children’s Museum Tucson and TMC that managed the Children’s Pavilion, the performers from Elemental Artistry, and the UA student interns Michael Brondello, James Eichberger, Brian MacArthur, Natalie Verges, and Madison Carrol.  Another unsung volunteer is my wife, Tia, who came up with the idea for the sponges and cold water—and who spent the past several months putting up with me as I got ready for this event!

This race is part of The Running Shop Grand Prix, produced by SAR.

TMC Meet Me Downtown: Off the Charts!

Jun 1, 2011

What a great night . . . thanks to everyone who came out and ran the TMC Meet Me Downtown Night Run tonight.  That was awesome!  Of course, it couldn’t be done without the 50 or so volunteers who helped at registration, water, set-up, break-down—and it couldn’t be done without sponsors and partners—and it couldn’t be done without participants . . . we are humbled by the showing tonight!

A special thank you to Greg Wenneborg and the Pima Community College track team who managed the timing:over 1,700 official finishers and another 200 - 300 non-competitive finishers.  If you won an age-group award, head to the Running Shop later this week for your prize.

And yes, we will open registration for the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown again after the race, so that all participants in Meet Me Downtown have an opportunity to participate in the inaugural Triple Crown series.  Thanks to Ross and the Zimmerman family for everything!  Give us a few days, then check the SAR site for next steps . . . .

MMM Rock & Stroll E vent Report by Steve Outridge

Apr 17, 2010

MMM Rock & Stroll Race Report – April 13, 2010
Steve Outridge, SAR Board Member

Downtown Tucson has never seen a party like this! Just over 1250 of our closest friends and neighbors came out and walked or ran at the SAR Meet Me at Maynard’s one year anniversary Rock & Stroll event. A fantastic time was had by all! Participants were treated to a free event that included the history and charm of downtown, 14 bands, a full cheerleader team on the Rattlesnake bridge, nuts, pedometers, chewy granola bars, amazing restaurant discounts, a huge Vendor Fair at Maynard’s Market, and much, much more.

So many people were responsible for pulling this event off we’re likely to leave some out. Believe me, we greatly appreciate all of you and know that we absolutely could not have done it without you! We’ll start with the Maynard’s Management Team, led by our fantastic and passionate leader, Jannie Cox, then there’s Dave Syverson, Penee White, Jocie Riley, Julie Kluge, Jenna Oertle and yours truly.

Randy Accetta, our fearless former SAR President, a founder of MMM, and a vital person behind the scenes in making the MMM engine run, was the emcee for the evening and did his usual masterful job. Then there’s a long list of volunteers who ensured a successful registration process: Doug Kluge (who also took care of setup for bands and many other logistics prior to and during the race), Mariska Kinsey Lecava, Gerard Gilette, Chuck Schuiteman, Lori Shoulders, Bob Howard, Don Branaman, Sharon Pasoce, Linda Heisley, Sandy White, Dan Hofstadter, Karen Meriodas, Sarah Vular, John Brown, Ron Lumm, Dave Hill, Margie Norem, and Brad White. We also had two students from the U of A, the aforementioned Jenna Oertle (who also made all of our fantastic signs for registration) and Anna McClain recruit a whole bunch of U of A volunteers who were integral to our success and the safety of all participants. Then there’s Cara Rene from DowntownTucson.org was a tremendous help in getting a huge number of things accomplished.  We thank them all.

A special thanks to our title sponsor, TMC Healthcare, 92.9 The Mountain, Maynard’s Market and Kitchen, The Running Shop and Worldly Soles and all of our many sponsors, as well as all of the bands, the Mountain View High School cheerleaders and the many participating restaurants.

Many thanks also to our current SAR President, Mary Lasser, who presented some impressive plaques to the 3 founders of MMM, Jannie Cox, Dave Syverson and Randy Accetta, and to Lucas Tyler who handled the design and acquisition of the plaques.

This event has taken SAR’s long-standing mission of health and fitness, and celebrating downtown and our community to a whole new level and we couldn’t be happier!

If you haven’t been down to Maynard’s yet on Monday nights, you’re missing something great – and it’s only going to get better. Visit http://www.meetmeatmaynards.com for all of the details.

See you on Monday night!
