2016 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown registration opened again!

Jul 20, 2016

2016 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown online registration opened again!  This is easier in the form of Q and A, so here goes:

Q.  I did the TMC Meet Me Downtown -- can I still sign up for the Triple Crown and receive guaranteed entry to the September 5th TMC Saguaro Labor Day Run and the Halloween Weekend TMC Get Moving Tucson half-marathon and 5k?

A.  Yes.  You can register online here.  If you already did the TMC Meet Me Downtown 5k, the Triple Crown cost is $79 through August 1st.  It then goes to $99 from August 2nd - August 28th.  There will be no Triple Crown registration after August 28th.

Q. I did NOT do the TMC Meet Me Downtown Night Run on Memorial Day -- can I still sign up for the Triple Crown?

A. YES.  We are piloting a Virtual Triple Crown, so all you have to do is sign up for the Virtual Triple Crown for the $99 price and you can still receive entry into the TMC Saguaro and TMC Get Moving Events.  Simply register, then submit a photo of you running a 5k to get credit for the TMC Meet Me Downtown Run.  Then we will add you to the roster of the Triple Crown registrants.  Don't forget: post a photo of you doing a 5k to the SAR facebook page and tag @RunSAR and @RunTucson on instagram and twitter.

Q.  I ran the TMC Meet Me Downtown and I have already signed up for the TMC Saguaro or TMC Get Moving races.  Can I still register for the Triple Crown?

A. Yes, if you have finished the Night Run and you have already signed up for the TMC Saguaro Labor Day Run or the TMC Get Moving 5k or Half-Marathon, please email me directly and I will get you the coupon code for the Triple Crown.

Q.  Is everyone who signed up for the Triple Crown eligible for the three-part "Finisher" medallion?

A.  This year, everyone who signs up for the Triple Crown receives the large cactus medal and the TMC Meet Me Downtown medallion.  To receive the additional medals, you simply need to finish the other two races.

Q. When do we get the TMC Saguaro medallion?

A.  Triple Crown registrants who finished the TMC Night Run and who finish the TMC Saguaro race can pick up their Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown medal at the Gabe Zimmerman tent at the conclusion of the Saguaro race on September 5th.

Q. Will there be more shirts available?

A.  We currently have about 25 of the 2016 gray Run Tucson - Run Your Passion shirts still available to current registrants at The Running Shop.  Please stop by and pick up a shirt. We will be ordering additional shirts, but they may be a different color and different texture.  We will solve for the t-shirt problem and have additional shirts available at the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown tent at Saguaro National Park on Monday, September 5th.

Q.  Why would the new shirts be different than the ones from May?

A.  The gray shirts were custom-made for us and at the moment we cannot get the same exact material.

Q. If we did the Virtual Triple Crown, can we still get our shirts and medals?

A. We have emailed everyone who signed up for the Virtual Triple Crown.  If you did the TMC Meet Me Downtown virtually but have not heard from us, please email me directly.

Q.  How many people have signed up for the Triple Crown?

A: As of this writing, almost 800 have registered.

Q.  How much money is being raised from the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown?

A. We provide $10 of every single registration directly to Child and Family Resource, so we're on track to raise over $8,000.

Q.  Do other charities benefit from the Triple Crown?

A.  The three Triple Crown races will also raise funds for these local groups: Friends of Saguaro, Reid Park Zoo, Children's Museum, Greater Tucson Leadership, Educational Enrichment Foundation, Team Hoyt Arizona Cox Charities, Living Streets Alliance, and Southern Arizona Roadrunners.  As you can see, these are all local organizations dedicated to helping our Tucson community be happy, healthy, and educated.

In addition to thanking you for your participation, we owe a debt of gratitude to a few folks:

Julia Strange and Tucson Medical Center for developing the concept and funding the program;
Ross Zimmerman and Emily Nottingham, Gabe's parents, for supporting the series;
Our friends at the Arizona Daily Star for helping develop the concept and supporting the events.

Once again, thank you for being part of the 2016 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown.

Questions You Might Have About The Virtual Crown
Q. I already signed up, but I'm going to be out of town for the TMC Night Run.  Can I still do it virtually?
A. Yes.  You will need to go to your own active.com account and change your category to the Virtual Triple Crown.  Please read about the other details below.  Please note that your agreement to the Triple Crown waiver also applies to all activities you undertake on behalf of completing the Virtual Triple Crown, even when you are not at the Triple Crown race sites.

Q. If I sign up for the Virtual, can I still run in person if I am in town?

A. Yes, absolutely!  The idea is to help those who have to miss any of the three races.  So if you need to miss the TMC Night Run, you can still run the TMC Saguaro and TMC Get Moving in person, and so forth for each of those events.

Q Why are you doing the Virtual Triple Crown? We thought the whole point was to bring people together as a community?
A Every year, we've had to turn people away because they miss a race or two.  It's time to change that rule!
NOTE: not to brag, but we go this email after announcing the Virtual Crown: Wonderful! This is soooo awesome! Whoever came up with this idea is brilliant! We had a team for the cinco de mayo run, I'll get some people to do this with me to support now that they can run from anywhere.. No excuses

Q. What's the price?
A. The current price for the Virtual Triple Crown is the same as the current in-person fee of $99.

Q. How do I prove that I did it virtually?

A. You must run or walk the race distance on the same weekend as the race and take a photo of yourself.  Then submit your "race" photo to the SAR facebook page or post your photo to both the @RunSAR and @RunTucson instagram feeds. Upon verification, you will be added to the 2016 virtual Triple Crown results and we will make sure you can get the race awards you earned.

You must run or walk the 3.1 mile distance any time over Memorial Day Weekend, 2016.
You must run or walk a 5k or an 8-Miler at any time over Labor Day Weekend, 2016.
You must walk or run a 5k or a Half-Marathon at any time over Halloween weekend, 2016.

Please note that your agreement to the Triple Crown waiver also applies to all activities you undertake on behalf of completing the Virtual Triple Crown, even when you are not at the Triple Crown race sites.

Q. I live in the Tucson area but I will be out of town for the TMC Night Run, how do I get my shirts and awards?
A. For those who live in Tucson who miss the TMC Meet Me Downtown Run, you can pick up your cactus/MMD Triple Crown medals and the "Run Tucson" and TMC Night Run shirt at the Running Shop throughout the month of June, 2016.  After June, you can also pick up your Triple Crown items at the TMC Saguaro race in September.  Please note, though, we cannot promise the perfect size of shirt.

Q. I do not live in the Tucson area, how do I get my awards? If you do not live near Tucson, we will mail your Run Tucson and TMC Night Run shirts and your cactus/MMD medal in the weeks after the TMC Night Run.  We will mail your TMC Saguaro and TMC Get Moving Tucson medals in the weeks after the TMC Get Moving Tucson events.

A. Who came up with the idea of the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown?
It was a joint collaboration between our good friends at Tucson Medical Center and the Arizona Daily Star, with permission and support from Ross Zimmerman, Emily Nottingham, and the rest of Gabe's family.

Q.This is a neat idea, but I still have questions -- who do I contact?
A. This is the first time we've ever done anything like this, so there are bound to be glitches of some sort.  Any questions can be addressed directly to me, the race director, at randy@runtucson.net.

Questions You Might Have About This Fancy-Pants Idea

Does Ross Zimmerman Approve of this?  Yes -- he thinks Gabe would love it: "Gabe was a big supporter of inclusion and community engagement. Gabe would have loved this.  The more stories about people recruiting their friends to complete their own personal Gabe Z Triple Crown in interesting places, the better.”

I already signed up, but I'm going to be out of town for the TMC Night Run.  Can I still do it virtually?

Check out these emails we got last week:
1) I am totally interested in a virtual Triple Crown race as I can’t be in Tucson for any of these. I am happy to submit my times on the selected dates to prove I have earned them!  I turn 40 this year and my goal is to do 40 5k’s (anything more or less doesn’t count) and loved the look of the medal in the registration information ….. I thought it would make a great addition to my collection!  (By the way, she lives in Columbia, Missouri.)
2) I registered for the Triple Crown, but recently found out I may be out of town for the first race (May 28). I was wondering if there is way to still complete that portion of it to earn all the medals? I am bummed that I will most likely miss it and I wanted to find out beforehand if I can make up for it.

NOTE: not to brag, but we go this email after announcing the Virtual Crown: Wonderful! This is soooo awesome! Whoever came up with this idea is brilliant! 2016 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown Registration Now Open

Jan 5, 2016

This year mark's the 5th year since the loss of Gabe Zimmerman.  Too often in America, families like the Zimmerman and Nottingham family have had to suffer through devastating loss. The 2011 shooting of U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and murder of 6 innocents shook our city to the core.  As the calendar turns, all of us as runners and walkers can come together in a celebration of Gabe and what's best in Tucson.  We invite you to join us this year in pursuit of health, community, and the joy that comes from being outside in this great region.

Please join any of the BEYOND events this coming weekend, including the Sunday January 9th free run or walk at Saguaro National Park West hosted by SAR and the National Park Service.  And, of course, you can sign up for the 3-race Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown.  Each registrant will receive entry to the three most popular races in Tucson and a commemorative "Run Tucson" shirt -- with a special finisher's award to all who complete all three events.

And as always, $10 of each registration will go directly to Gabe's favorite charity, Child and Family Resources -- plus each race will raise funds for other local organizations, including the Children's Museum, Educational Enrichment Foundation, Greater Tucson Leadership, Living Streets Alliance, MyTeamTriumph, the Reid Park Zoo, Friends of Saguaro, Cox Charities, the TMC Foundation, Southern Arizona Roadrunners, and others.

Special thanks to the Arizona Daily Star and our friends at Tucson Medical Center for helping us develop the Triple Crown.  And as these years pass, I continue to be grateful to Ross and Emily for sharing their son with us.

The three-race series commemorates Gabe Zimmerman, a Tucson native who lost his life in the January 2011 shooting here in Tucson.  From the Gabe Zimmerman Davison Canyon Trailhead to the Gabe Zimmerman Meeting Room at the U.S. Capital, Gabe’s presence will forever be a part of our community.  We are grateful to Ross Zimmerman and Julia Strange at Tucson Medical Center for developing the concept of the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown – and we’re thankful to the Arizona Daily Star and Caliente for helping implement it. Gabe’s whole family has been devoted to fitness, running, and the Arizona outdoors – we are honored to be able to celebrate the spirit of Gabe and highlight the possibilities for Tucson through the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown.

Each year, $10 from each Triple Crown entry will be donated to Gabe’s favorite non-profit, Child and Family Resources.  Additional Tucson-based organizations will receive a portion of the proceeds from the individual events. Over $20,000 has been donated due to your efforts.  Thank you!

Now, for those who have signed up already: Thank you!  From conversations with runners and walkers throughout our community, it’s clear that the memory of Gabe inspires each of us to a live a more thoughtful and loving life, with compassion for those in need and the internal bravery to live our own passions.  Indeed, these three running events—with all of their ups and downs and city streets under construction—are a metaphor for developing a healthy community, all of us putting one step in front of the other in pursuit of our collective destination.

We are thankful to Emily Nottingham, and Ross Zimmerman and the whole Zimmerman family for allowing us to honor Gabe through this series.  The Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown benefits Child and Family Resources – if you’re interested in learning more about CFR or making a donation directly to this important non-profit, please see http://www.childfamilyresources.org and their special Gabe Zimmerman Memorial Fund: http://www.childfamilyresources.org/donate-matching.html. ;

Event Details

You will receive a special “Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown Run Tucson” shirt for registering and each of you will also receive a special Meet Me Downtown medal. Then, for completing all three races, you will receive a special three-piece finisher’s medal, based on the themes from Meet Me Downtown, Saguaro, and Get Moving Tucson.  (Remember, though, you need to complete all three events to receive the special finisher’s award!)

You can pick up both your shirt and your Meet Me Downtown medal at the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown tent on race day, Saturday June 2nd, at the race site (200 South Sixth Avenue) from 5:00-8:30 pm.

Please note that the Meet Me Downtown race is the only location to pick up your Triple Crown materials.  We will have an alphabetized list of Triple Crown registrants to check your name off as you pick up your shirt and medal.  We do not have the ability to mail shirts or medals to folks who cannot pick them up, so please be sure to either pick them up yourself or send someone to pick them up for you.  If you can, please wear your new shirt in the race – it will be a great way to show your support for Gabe!

Once again, we at the Southern Arizona Roadrunners thank you for doing the series – and finally, we offer a special thanks to Julia Strange at Tucson Medical Center and the folks at Caliente and the Daily Star for enabling us to develop the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown concept.

Have fun on race night!

A Word From Ross Zimmerman

Oct 11, 2011

I hope everyone enjoyed the TMC GMT Half Marathon and 5K on Sunday Oct. 9th.  Kelly O’Brien, Gabe Zimmerman’s fiancee, and I ran the half marathon together.  We liked the course a lot and decided Gabe would have liked it, too.  The course passed several places that held memories of Gabe for both of us.  That added to the day.  Our family and friends had very good experiences as well.  The run and the day were a fitting celebration of the life of Gabe Zimmerman and the others dear to us we’ve lost this year.  This was a proactive, positive way to promote personal and societal physical and mental health.  Gabe the social worker would have enthusiastically approved.  Randy Accetta, Julia Strange, and the myriad of folks who helped make this event and the previous two events in the Gabe Z Triple Crown successes have my appreciation and thanks.  We hope this series will continue.

One of the things I’ve learned since Gabe’s passing is how many other people I know and have met who have been touched by the loss of loved ones before their times.  Unfortunately, far too many suffer or perish due to the diseases of overweight, inactivity, and substance abuse, not violence or accident.  There are some things we can do to reduce the risks of violence or accident.  Much more can be accomplished, by taking care of your loved ones and yourself with a positive, active, healthy life.  That gives you and them better lives and better relationships.  On our way home, Kelly reminded me of a bike ride she, Gabe, and I did together.  Up a steep hill, he raced me to the point of stomach upset (and beyond…), all in good fun.  Gabe and I had many, many active adventures together.  I will treasure those until the end of my life, and that’s a comfort.  Go have adventures with your loved ones as well.

Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown registration closed for now—will open again after the Night Run

May 25, 2011

PLEASE NOTE: Although the first round of registration closed on May 28th, we will open another round of registration the week after TMC Meet Me Downtown Night Run, enabling everyone who completed the Night Run to participate—and enabling new folks to sign up for this special race series.  All registrants will still receive the “RUN TUCSON” technical t-shirt, but you need to complete all three to receive the special commemorative prize.  More details to be announced so check here for details!

Thank you very much to the 531 people who have already registered—we’re still doing data entry on those who signed up at the last minute, but here are some quick facts: four registrants are over 70, the oldest registrant is 78 years (Delwin Kruschke, you are awesome!!), while three are tied for the youngest at 10 years old (don’t worry, they are doing the 5k’s!!).  The average age is 41.  Participants are largely from Tucson, though they also come from California, Pennsylvania, New York and throughout Arizona.  Check out the TMC Meet Me Downtown site for details on the first event!  Thanks again to everyone who has signed up for the inaugural Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown!
