Race Recap

by Randy Accetta -- contact me at randy@runtucson.net if you have any questions!

As you can see in the race results here, the overall times were speedy, with racing newcomers showing off some serious speed.  First place overall went to Jessica Culver, running for The Workout Group after spending her college years playing soccer at the University of Arizona.  With a time of 18:28, Jessica earned her first road race victory. Second place finisher Lauren Reasoner from TRP has been tearing up the roads lately.  Her time of 19:00 shows some range, as she has been racing everything from marathons on down this past year.  Third place was Mesa’s Caroline Sekaquaptewa, the first master’s runner at 43 years old, who cruised the 3.1 miles in 19:32, holding off UA grad student Emily Maas, who finished in fourth.

The Men's Mile was a crowded affair, as the men, women, boys, and girls sprinted three laps through the crowds on the stadium concourse. First place went to high school runner Julian Sosa in 5:18, second was Robert Mcfadyen in 5:32, while Tim Bentley gave the youngsters a run for it, finishing in third.

Timing and Awards

Age group awards are for the top three in each age group; if you earned an award, please visit The Running Shop at 3055 North Campbell before the end of the year to pick up your award.  If you have a question about your published time, please contact race timer Greg Wenneborg

Event Recap

What a beautiful morning for our first-ever staging at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium.  The health insurance coalition indicated that the event was a success, with numerous ACA enrollments, while the health fair booths teemed with activity.  Speaking of teeming with activity, the Girls on the Run untimed event went off beautifully, with over 500 young girls and their running buddies happily cruising the course.  Thanks to your entries, the non-profit Southern Arizona Roadrunners will earn $2,000 to be used for operations and their children’s running programs.

As some of you know, there was a medical emergency during one of the events; fortunately, several medical professionals teamed up with Tucson Fire Department to stabilize the runner.  He is currently undergoing medical care with a positive prognosis.  Thank you to all who provided assistance!

Plans for Future

As many of you know, we’ve been bouncing around a bit in terms of locations and dates for the past few years.  We’ve received a number of emails complimenting the course and the venue, so based on your comments and our experiences, it looks like we’ll keep this event on the calendar as is.  However, men have asked if they can race too – so we may simply make this a 5k race for men and women and skip the one mile. . . .

Sponsors

We are grateful to Tucson Medical Center for their support of women’s health and wellness.  The Running Shop provided gift certificates and other logistical support.  The Arizona Daily Star provided advertising support.

Volunteers

Special thanks to the SAR and Workout Group volunteers who made the race possible: Linda Whelan, Gary Parcher, Pam Hoyt, Sue Abramson, Monica Bermudez, Noemi & Craig, Doreen Davis, Steve Sheldon and daughter, Connie Lopez, Michelle Hawk, Michael Miller, Tim Bentley, Gary Giese, and others, including course helpers Eric Sanders, Dave Odom, and Joe Plassman.  Special thanks to the TriGirls for handling Mile 1 water station – and a huge number of UA students were on hand to help with the course and Girls on the Run.

TMC BE Tucson Women’s 5k and Men’s Mile Race Report

Feb 28, 2017

It's not often you get to run a Tucson race in the rain, so you can count yourself lucky if you cruised the new 3.1 mile course around the TMC campus at the 6th Annual TMC BE Tucson Women's 5k.
With a capped field, over 275 runners played in the rain, including a band of hearty male milers.

Produced by the joint partnership of the Southern Arizona Roadrunners and Run Tucson, the TMC BE Tucson event raised $2,000 for the non-profit SAR and $2,005 for the TMC For Women Campaign (thanks Rachel!!).  If you want to make an individual donation to the TMC For Women campaign, please see http://www.tmcaz.com/makingherstory.

If you want to see some great photos, check out our friend Kerry Whelan's Goatographer page on facebook.

Full results can be found here: http://azroadrunners.org/results/detail/betucsonresults2017.

If you think you won an age group award, please visit The Running Shop at 3055 North Campbell Avenue to get your prizes.  If you did not pick up your wine glass, the Running Shop will keep them on hand until March 15th.

In the 5k, TRP's Lauren Reasoner, 32, easily bested the field in a time of 18:36.  Reasoner has been on quite a roll lately, winning numerous local races and narrowly missing the sub-3:00 hour mark in a recent marathon.  At TMC BE Tucson, she took the early pace and was never seriously challenged by the field -- and it was a crowded field up front with some of Tucson's best runners over the past decade and more.
Second place went to Jennifer Tetrault, 27, in 18:534, who is coming back to racing after time out for graduate school. Tetrault outran three-time Olympic Trials Marathoner Paula Morrison of The Grinder's, 43, who took third in 19:01. Morrison is one of the best runners in Tucson history, with a marathon PR of 2:45, and she's making her way back into racing shape after the recent birth of her daughter. It was an honor to see such a fast field mix it up among the raindrops.

The oldest finisher was 75-year-old Beckey Kendall in a time of 49:09, but she had plenty of company in the 70+ division, as seven other women in the age division finished the race -- proving yet again that Father Time should not mess with Tucson's tough women.

The Men's Mile was won by UA student Cheyenne Grabiec in 5:13, while Robert Lipsey held true to his promise to not let anyone finish behind him.

Now, on to some of the other great aspects of the race.  First, even a low-key event like this takes about 40 volunteers to make it work.  The SAR Board has done a great job of supporting this race and volunteering to make it successful.  We're especially grateful to the creative minds of Linda Whelan and Maggie Happe -- and the artistic vision of photographer Kerry Whelan.  Special thanks to Michelle Hawk for handing all the race course operations and helping keep us safe!

Additional shout-out to TMC's Jim Tucker, Mary Atkinson, Julia Strange, and the gang at TMC security and facilities!

Here's a partial list of race weekend help, including volunteers from azroadrunners.org, tucsontrigirls.org, and The Workout Group:

Finally, we cannot do this sort of stuff without all the help from our sponsors.  Tucson Medical Center provided funding and resources (not just parking control, but hot coffee!!).
Walgreens provided funding for the operations, while the Running Shop provided packet pickup and all those great wine glasses to the first 300 registrants and the age group awards.
Muscle Milk was on hand, while Rincon Air Conditioning and Heating was out working instead!  Thanks to the BEYOND-TUCSONFoundation for handing out items after the race!
Special thanks to our media partners, including our friends at Tucson Morning Blend, Tucson Lifestyle, Cox Communications,My92.9, and the Arizona Daily Star.

The next event Tia and I produce is the TMC Meet Me Downtown weekend.  Follow the www.azroadrunners.org links and take advantage of early pricing for the 2017 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown and the TMC Meet Me Downtown weekend, including the Friday Night Festival of Miles and the TMC 5k Night Run.

Four Updates to TMC BE TUCSON on February 21

Feb 9, 2016

1) The mail-in form must be mailed by February 13, so be sure to pop it into the mail this week!

2) It turns out that this whole "BE FAST" idea is not so popular after all, so we're going to go back to what we did a few years ago, with a Men's Mile followed by a single women's-only 5k run and walk.  There is still open and incentive-based prize money, with prize money and age-group details on the race page, for those who care about that sort of thing.  (By the way, there are still about 43 free wine glasses available, if you care about that sort of thing . . . )

3) The course will be run in reverse this year, so get ready to go counter-clockwise! This route has more gradual downhill, so it should be faster if you care about that sort of thing . . .

4) Here's the updated race weekend schedule:
Friday Night
6:00 - 7:30: Ladies Night at The Running Shop
Sunday Morning
7:00-8:00 Registration at The Core, with photo booth, stretching activities, and more
8:00 Start of Men's Mile
8:30 Start of BE TUCSON Women's-Only 5k
9:30 Free Children's Dash Around the Circle (Note, this is a 100 yard dash for fun -- no t-shirts)
Ongoing: vendor expo and fun things to do

TMC BE TUCSON RACE REPORT

Feb 24, 2015

Randy Accetta here, with a quick thank you for signing up for the TMC BE TUCSON Women's 5k and Men's Mile.  The event raised funds for our local running club, the non-profit Southern Arizona Roadrunners and the Children's Fitness Fund.  Before we dig into this race report, please note a few items:

1)   As a special thank you, all registrants of TMC BE TUCSON can receive a discount to the three-race series Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown.  Simply go the Triple Crown website on the SAR page or the Triple Crown online registration page and sign up.

If you sign up online, use the coupon code BETUCSON to receive $10 off.  If you mail in a form, write "BETUCSON" on your form and take $10 off (expires March 1st).

2)  If you would rather not commit to a 3-race series, then you should sign up for the May 30 TMC Meet Me Downtown 5k Night Run & Walk, the city's biggest running event.  Click here for race and team details, and click here for online registration. A team of 5 or more is $20 per person, individual registration is currently $20 but goes up to $25 on March 1st.

3) Photo contest: If you took a selfie at TMC's The Core or if you took any snapshots at the event, please post them to www.facebook.com/southern.arizona.roadrunners.  We will do a random drawing of all race photos posted by Wednesday at midnight and award the winner a free entry to May 30th TMC Meet Me Downtown.  Special thanks to Kerry Whelan for excellent race photos!

OK -- enough of that!  See below for all sorts of post-race information and some photos. Thanks again for doing the TMC BE TUCSON 5k and Men's Mile, produced by the Southern Arizona Roadrunners.

If you have any questions, please contact me at randy@runtucson.net or at http://www.twitter.com/runtucson

RACE RESULTS: BE FAST

In the BE FAST race, Stephanie Bruce, running for Northern Arizona Elite, set a course record.  Bruce, 31, completed the hilly 3-loop circuit at Skyline and Campbell in 17:53, running strong uphill and into a headwind three times. One of our country's top road racers with a very good chance of making the 2016 Olympic team, Bruce took the lead early, and ran to an easy victory.

Second place when to former UA runner Nicole Truxes, 25, now running for the Phoenix-based women's racing team, the Sonoran Distance Project.  Third place went to UA graduate student Dari Duval, a member of the SAR Board who runs for Tucson's Workout Group Racing Team.

Special thanks to all the women who ran the BE FAST race. We realize that it took some courage to race against such speedsters (and that it took you out of the competition for the open age group awards)  - next year, we'll give a gift bag for doing the BE FAST race!

Timing by Roadrunner Race Timing, Course Measured by Dave Hill

1 Bruce,  Stephanie 17:53.4

2 Truxes,  Nicole18:52.4

3 Duval, Dari 19:28.9

MEN'S MILE

We had some speed demons in the men's mile, too: Tucson's Alex Evans took first place in 4:42, narrowly outrunning Zach Wallach, from Colorado.  Mark Martin, 54, cruised 5:25 to take home $50 for breaking the time standard, as did Richard Senti, 68, who ran a very nice 6:21.

Ever-stalwart Bob Lipsy came home at the tail end -- we should give a prize to Bob as he also walked the TMC Saguaro Labor Day 8-miler and the TMC Get Moving Tucson A-Mountain Half-Marathon.

UPDATE Details for Sunday’s BE TUCSON Women’s 5k, BE Fast Women’s 5k, Men’s Mile, and Kids Dash

Feb 20, 2015

Hello again to the folks who have registered for this tomorrow's Fourth Annual TMC BE TUCSON Women’s 5k and Men’s Mile.   We love our running community and we're glad to have so many great races and places to run. In fact, in one of my jobs I travel the country teaching weekend seminars on running — and I am happy to say that the Tucson running community is one of the strongest and most organized in the nation.  Thanks for being part of it!

OK, on to the race.  Below is an updated information sheet with all the details on the event.

SUNDAY morning you can pick up your shirt and number at La Encantada's The Core, near restaurant circle.  Registration will start at about 6:45.  Below that is a list of pre-registrants, while farther below that is a list of the first 300 who receive the free wine glasses.

ALSO: you have to get your race timing shoe chip from Greg Wenneborg, the race timer, at The Core before your race.  He will have volunteers on hand to ensure that you get your timing chip!!

Finally,  I met more than a few folks at Friday night's Running Shop Wine and Cheese who said that this is their first race — congratulations to all of you for taking on this great activity!  You'll have three easy loops with plenty of folks to cheer you on!!

Finally, finally: on the other side of the coin, we will have a small but fast field in the TMC BE FAST Women's 5k.  Among the runners is Stephanie Bruce, one of the nation's best 5k runners coming down from Flagstaff, and two members from the Sonoran Distance Project from Phoenix, Priscilla Schultz and Nicole Truxes.  If you can, be sure to give them a hand as they race the men who are entered in the Men's Mile

OK — should be fun!  See you tomorrow morning,

Randy Accetta

 Course, Staging and Other Information

Timing - The race will be timed by Greg Wenneborg and the Southern Arizona Roadrunner timing system.  Please pick up your timing tag at The Core on race morning.  Please return your timing tag to the volunteers at the finish line area.  Please put your bib number on the front of your shirt using the pins provided at registration and please put your timing tag onto the front of your shoes using the twist ties that are provided.

The course is a loop -  It starts with a screaming downhill on Campbell, then turns right onto Skyline, then turns right and takes a 30 yard uphill to the parking lots; turn right and then circle the lower lot past Crate and Barrel and AJ’s; turn right at AJ’s and follow the loop parking lot all the way back to the starting/finish line – each lap is almost exactly one mile.  Quick advice: Take advantage of the downhill, and don’t be scared of the uphill. Be patient so you can be strong on lap three!

Volunteers - Special thanks to a host of organizations for being course marshals, registration, and water station volunteers: The runners of the Workout Group; the TucsonTri-Girls; and the Sonoran Distance Project.  If you want to help out on race day, we’d be happy to put you to work – contact Tia Accetta at tia@runtucson.net.

Water Stations – There is a single water station of Culligan water near the starting line.  5k runners will pass it two times in the race.  There will also be plenty of Culligan water at the staging area.  Thanks to the Tri-Girls for helping with water.

Restrooms – WasteManagement has provided port-o-johns at the northeast corner of the La Encantada parking lots, near the race start.  Later in the morning, the La Encantada restrooms will open, on the second floor, down the walkway from The Core.

Parking  - there is plenty of parking throughout the La Encantada property, though La Encantada asks participants to not park in front of AJ’s.

T-shirts  -  We have two styles of shirts from Leslie Jordan designs: a pink sleeveless and a pink short-sleeve.  There are 650 shirts total, in all sizes. Please arrive early to get the shirt and style you want.  We do NOT promise specific sizes or styles.  Additional technical shirts will be for sale at $10 apiece after the race.

NOTE: all children under 10 are free with no t-shirt.   Please just be sure to sign them up and sign a waiver.

Weather – The day is due to be sunny and warm, about 57-degrees at 7:00 am, with a day-time high of 77.

NOTES: There is no bag check, so please be respectful of each other’s property.

Men’s Mile Details

In a new twist to the traditional men's mile, we're doing a few things to make the Men's Mile more exciting:

1) Men 45-and-over start at 7:45, at the same time as the Prize Money Women's Race

2) Men under 45 start exactly one minute afterwards

Q. Will there be prize money in the Men's Mile?

A. Yes, based on performance: $50 to the first man who crosses the finish line ahead of the top woman; $50 to first man who breaks 5:00 minutes; $50 to the first man over 45 to break 5:30; $50 to the first man over 55 to break 6:00 minutes; $50 to the first man over 65 to break 7:00 minutes.  Men 50 and over will start with the BE Fast women’s field, while men under 50 will start 60 seconds behind the women.
Q.  Are there Age-Group Awards in the Men's Mile
A. No, just the prize money incentive and the cool technical shirts that men receive for signing up.

Women’s Prize Money Race and Open Race Details

Q. Who can enter the BE FAST Prize Money Race?

A. All women who can run under 24:00 for 5k.  No proof is needed, just show up.   Turns out that we have some of the Southwest’s fastest women, including Stephanie Bruce who runs for Oiselle and Hoka; Priscilla Welch and Nicole Truxes from Sonoran Distance Project; Dari Duval from The Workout Group; plus a host of age-group speedsters.

Last year we gave away $1,000 in race prize money – let’s see what happens this year

Q. What is prize money in the Women's Prize Money Race?

A. $200 to first woman under 17:30 minutes, and $100 to first five women under 18:30 (first woman under 17:30 minutes gets only $200 total).

Q.  Is there age-group prize money?

A. Yes:
$50 to first over-40 woman who breaks masters record of 18:25 (Paula Morrison, 2014)

$50 to first over-50 who breaks course record of 22:14 (Merry Dearmon, 2014)

$50 to first over-60 who breaks course record of 24:08 (Mary Black, 2014)

Q. When does the Women's Prize Money Race begin?

A. The women in this race will start with the men at the Men's Mile starting time of 7:45.

Q. Will there be age group awards in the Women's Prize Money?

A.  Only the bonus money for breaking records in the 40+, 50+, 60+.

Q. I don't want to run the Prize Money race.  Will there be age group awards in the Women's Open Race?

A. Yes, there will be age group prizes in the Women's Open Race for the top three in 10-year age groups (under 20, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80+, with prizes from La Encantada merchants, the Running Shop, and wine glass to age group winners)

SAFETY CONCERNS FOR RUNNERS AND WALKERS

SAFETY CONCERNS FOR RUNNERS AND WALKERS

As we run in winter darkness, it’s a good time to practice some safety tips. Do you have any other tips?  Post them to the SAR facebook page.

Report to the Police -- Report any threatening behavior to the police.  If you feel threatened, bothered, or harassed in any way, call 911 and report the incident to the police.

Bring a Phone – If running alone, especially in the dark, bring your phone so that you have the ability to call 911.

Head for Safety – In the event that you feel threatened, head for the nearest safe space, such as another person, a store, a house, or a crowded intersection.  Make noise and be clear about your needs.

Avoid Headphones -- Headphones are dangerous because they block out all local sounds. Resist the urge to wear headphones while doing any running unless it is in a gym or on a treadmill. If you must wear headphones, wear them in only one ear and with the volume lower.

Run facing traffic -- When running on the road, you are just like a pedestrian: You should run or walk facing traffic and off the street when possible.  Be careful of traffic pulling out from side streets, as drivers rarely look right when pulling into the first lane of traffic.

Follow the Rules of the Path – When running on a multi-use path, follow the rules established for that path.  As a runner, you are probably the most nimble, so keep an eye for bikes and those who cannot move quickly, Be respectful of the needs of others.

Cross at Crosswalks -- You have the right of way when you are in a crosswalk, but many drivers are watching automobile traffic and not pedestrians.

Be Bright at Night -- Wear white or reflective clothing so that drivers, cyclists, and others can see you.  Running specialty shops sell reflective armbands with blinking lights that are effective for being seen at night or in the early morning hours.

Be Aware – Check your surroundings while running.  Use your peripheral vision and your ears to know what is going on in the area within 30 to 50 feet of you.

Vary Your Routes - Avoid the habit of being at the same place on your run at the same time in any given week. Change the time you run and the course you follow weekly.

Recruit a Running Partner - In addition to there being safety in numbers, having a running buddy will help you to stay focused on your goals and will provide support for your new endeavor.

Run with Your Dog - Running is also great exercise for your true best friend and could make a predator the prey.

Join a Running Group - In addition to being a fun and social way to get into the sport, exercising with a group is the safest way to go.

Wear ID -- Wear an identification tag on your shoe or somewhere on your clothing that includes vital information such as name, address, emergency contact info, primary doctor, and insurance information.

Tell Someone -- Let someone in your household know where you're headed -- which direction you're going and the length of time you expect to be out.
