Wanna' do the Triple Crown but have to be out of town for one or more of the races? If you have to miss any of the three races, you can still be part of the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown. Simply register for the series, being sure to choose the "Virtual Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown" category -- then following the dropdown menus, click on which races you will have to miss.
Run or walk each of the race distances on the same weekend as the race and take a photo of yourself. Then submit your "race" photo to the SAR Facebook page or post your photo to both the @RunSAR and @RunTucson instagram feeds.
Upon verification, you will be added to the 2016 virtual Triple Crown results and we will make sure you can get the race awards you earned.
WHAT DO YOU GET?
Questions You Might Have About This Fancy-Pants Idea
Does Ross Zimmerman Approve of this? Yes -- he thinks Gabe would love it: "Gabe was a big supporter of inclusion and community engagement. Gabe would have loved this. The more stories about people recruiting their friends to complete their own personal Gabe Z Triple Crown in interesting places, the better.”
I already signed up, but I'm going to be out of town for the TMC Night Run. Can I still do it virtually? Yes. You will need to go to your own active.com account and change your category to the Virtual Triple Crown. Please read about the other details below. Please note that your agreement to the Triple Crown waiver also applies to all activities you undertake on behalf of completing the Virtual Triple Crown, even when you are not at the Triple Crown race sites.
If I sign up for the Virtual, can I still run in person if I am in town? Yes, absolutely! The idea is to help those who have to miss any of the three races. So if you need to miss the TMC Night Run, you can still run the TMC Saguaro and TMC Get Moving in person, and so forth for each of those events.
Why are you doing the Virtual Triple Crown? We thought the whole point was to bring people together as a community? Every year, we've had to turn people away because they miss a race or two. It's time to change that rule!
Check out these emails we got last week:
1) I am totally interested in a virtual Triple Crown race as I can’t be in Tucson for any of these. I am happy to submit my times on the selected dates to prove I have earned them! I turn 40 this year and my goal is to do 40 5k’s (anything more or less doesn’t count) and loved the look of the medal in the registration information ….. I thought it would make a great addition to my collection! (By the way, she lives in Columbia, Missouri.)
2) I registered for the Triple Crown, but recently found out I may be out of town for the first race (May 28). I was wondering if there is way to still complete that portion of it to earn all the medals? I am bummed that I will most likely miss it and I wanted to find out beforehand if I can make up for it.
NOTE: not to brag, but we go this email after announcing the Virtual Crown: Wonderful! This is soooo awesome! Whoever came up with this idea is brilliant! We had a team for the cinco de mayo run, I'll get some people to do this with me to support now that they can run from anywhere.. No excuses
What's the price? The current price for the Virtual Triple Crown is the same as the current in-person fee of $99.
How do I prove that I did it virtually? You must run or walk the race distance on the same weekend as the race and take a photo of yourself. Then submit your "race" photo to the SAR facebook page or post your photo to both the @RunSAR and @RunTucson instagram feeds. Upon verification, you will be added to the 2016 virtual Triple Crown results and we will make sure you can get the race awards you earned.
You must run or walk the 3.1 mile distance any time over Memorial Day Weekend, 2016.
You must run or walk a 5k or an 8-Miler at any time over Labor Day Weekend, 2016.
You must walk or run a 5k or a Half-Marathon at any time over Halloween weekend, 2016.
Please note that your agreement to the Triple Crown waiver also applies to all activities you undertake on behalf of completing the Virtual Triple Crown, even when you are not at the Triple Crown race sites.
I live in the Tucson area but I will be out of town for the TMC Night Run, how do I get my shirts and awards? For those who live in Tucson who miss the TMC Meet Me Downtown Run, you can pick up your cactus/MMD Triple Crown medals and the "Run Tucson" and TMC Night Run shirt at the Running Shop throughout the month of June, 2016. After June, you can also pick up your Triple Crown items at the TMC Saguaro race in September. Please note, though, we cannot promise the perfect size of shirt.
I do not live in the Tucson area, how do I get my awards? If you do not live near Tucson, we will mail your Run Tucson and TMC Night Run shirts and your cactus/MMD medal in the weeks after the TMC Night Run. We will mail your TMC Saguaro and TMC Get Moving Tucson medals in the weeks after the TMC Get Moving Tucson events.
Who came up with the idea of the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown? It was a joint collaboration between our good friends at Tucson Medical Center and the Arizona Daily Star, with permission and support from Ross Zimmerman, Emily Nottingham, and the rest of Gabe's family.
This is a neat idea, but I still have questions -- who do I contact? This is the first time we've ever done anything like this, so there are bound to be glitches of some sort. Any questions can be addressed directly to me, the race director, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
